How It All Began

My interest in natural health goes back a lot further than EarthOnated. In fact, it started when I was about five years old.

One day, my mother came home and decided that the white bread, breakfast cereals, and white sugar had to go. Out went our Captain Crunch and Corn Flakes, and in came whole wheat bread and granola. Needless to say, we weren’t impressed. That whole wheat bread tasted pretty awful to us kids!

Before long, she had us taking vitamins, too. At the time, I remember thinking how fortunate we were because most of my friends’ families weren’t doing anything like that.

Looking back, I’ve learned that not everything we believed about nutrition back then was necessarily right. My own views on vitamins, supplements, carbohydrates, and diet have changed considerably over the years. That’s part of life. You learn, you question things, and sometimes you discover that what you once believed wasn’t quite what you thought.

At seven years old, I began studying martial arts, something I’ve continued throughout my life and into my sixties. I was involved in just about every sport I could get my hands on during my school years, particularly track and field, basketball, volleyball, and badminton. Boxing became another interest, and I went on to compete in weightlifting for 38 years.

Health and physical fitness weren’t passing interests for me. They became a way of life. I’ve always preferred a natural, holistic approach to looking after myself, and that curiosity eventually led me to explore ozone therapy, including autohemotherapy treatments.

Over the years, I’ve continued learning, experimenting with my own nutrition, and reconsidering ideas I once took for granted. For the past three and a half years, I’ve followed a carnivore diet. Whether it’s exercise, nutrition, or natural products, I’ve never stopped asking questions.

And I have to give my mother credit.

Although she was strict about what we ate during the week, Sundays were a different story. She’d take us to the corner drugstore and give us a dollar to spend on candy. Back then, chocolate bars were only ten cents each. Imagine being a kid with a whole dollar to spend!

We could buy whatever we wanted, eat our fill, and then go home and brush our teeth. That was the deal. Funny enough, we could never finish all the chocolate bars anyway.

Today, I look back on those years with a great deal of appreciation. What seemed like an unreasonable decision to a five-year-old turned out to be the beginning of a lifelong interest in health and nutrition.

So, Mom, thank you for throwing out the Captain Crunch.
